Christoph U. Correll is Professor of Psychiatry at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, New York, USA, and Professor and Chair, Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Charité University Medicine, Berlin, Germany. He completed his medical studies at the Free University of Berlin, Germany, and University of Dundee School of Medicine, Scotland. He is board certified in general psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry, having completed both residencies at Zucker Hillside Hospital, New York. Prof. Correll focusses on the identification and treatment of youth and adults with severe mental illness, clinical trials, epidemiology, psychopharmacology, meta-analyses and the interface between physical and mental health.

He has authored over 750 journal articles that have been cited over 54,000 times and received over 40 research awards.

Since 2014, he has been listed annually by Clarivate/Web of Science as one of the “most influential scientific minds” and “top 1% cited scientists in the area of psychiatry”.

Heterogeneity of illness causes, expressions and outcomes complicate the illness course and treatment response, remission, recovery and relapse prevention efforts as well as functional attainment and quality of life in individuals with mental disorders. To advance scientific progress and clinical care, stratified or, ideally, personalized management options are a high priority in medicine at large. Precision psychiatry is a field that aims at taking advantage of biopsychosocial factors that are associated with illness expression and severity, disease course modification, and optimized efficacy and/or minimized harm. Recent advances indicate that strides towards precision medicine are possible, despite challenges due to overlapping and non-specific disease markers, imprecise univariate and multivariable prediction models, insufficient external validation studies, and challenges with scalability and implementation. Nevertheless, technological advances, including high-throughput, artificial intelligence- and machine learning-informed computational approaches hold promise toward a transformation of prediction and precision psychiatry. These advances indicate that clinical and biological markers can be identified and harnessed, especially when focusing on time- and cost-effective as well as widely accessible precision targets, even for such highly complex disorders, such as mental diseases.
